FAQ - Häufige Fragen

  • Who can participate in the language courses?

    The language courses are intended for students and staff at TU Dresden. Students from other universities (HTW, HfbK, EHS) should check with their own university regarding possible partnerships.

  • Are there online or hybrid courses?

    Most language courses are offered in person on campus. There are also online courses - you can find this information in the respective course descriptions in OPAL.

  • How can I find out which language courses I can have credited toward my degree?

    You can find the regulations regarding credit recognition in your study regulations ("Studienordnung"). Generally, language courses totaling 4 SWS are awarded 5 ECTS credits upon successful completion of the exam.

  • Is attendance mandatory?

    No. But since demand for language courses is often very high, spots may be given to people on the waiting list in the event of unexcused absences during the first two class sessions.
    For UNIcert®-accredited courses, the following applies: To earn the certificate, you must have a minimum attendance rate of 75%.

  • I already have some language skills - which course level should I choose?

    If you already have prior knowledge of a language, we require appropriate proof of language proficiency (e.g., a certificate of attendance from a previous semester, a certificate) or a placement test:: https://www.sprachausbildung.tu-dresden.de/de/einstufungstests.html
    This ensures that you enroll in the course that best suits your prior knowledge and achieve optimal learning progress.
    Existing proof of language proficiency will be reviewed by the instructor during the first class session.

  • Why can't I register? / Why can't I see the courses?

    Please always use your ZIH account to register.
    In addition, you are generally allowed to register for only one proficiency level per language and semester. As a result, some courses may not be visible or available due to enrollment restrictions. If you wish to switch courses, please drop your current course first.

  • Can I participate if I'm on the waiting list?

    No. If spots become available, you will automatically be moved up on the list and receive an email notification.

  • Is the exam mandatory?

    If you wish to have the language course credited toward your degree or if you need a certificate of attendance, you must take an exam. For most courses, this is a written exam. According to some study regulations, an oral exam is also required for credit. Please check your study documents for more information.
    For some course formats, the exam consists of a presentation (e.g., EBW2) or a term paper (e.g., Academic Writing). You can find this information in OPAL.

  • How do I register for the exam?

    Please register for exam K3010 in Selma during the registration period. This is mandatory; otherwise, no grade can be entered and no language certificate can be issued. To receive credit, you may also need to register for the corresponding module.
    You will receive a reminder email from us in a timely manner with instructions on how to register.
    If you need to take an oral exam, you must register for it in OPAL during the registration period.

  • How do I get a Certificate of Attendance?

    If you pass the exam and have registered correctly in Selma, a Certificate of Attendance will be issued automatically and stored in your document folder in Selma. A signature may be required for credit to be granted. To obtain a signature, please send the language certificate to sprachen.zentrum@tu-dresden.de.

  • How many credits do I get for language courses?

    As a general rule, you will receive 5 ECTS credits for a language course totaling 4 SWS. Please consult your program guidelines for the exact requirements for credit recognition.
