Location:
The tests are available online during the above period. You can also take the test at the Multimedia Language Learning Centre (MSZ; SE1, Zellescher Weg 22, 2nd floor).

English:
Foreign students who do not have a German Abitur must take the English placement test!

French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Russian:
Placement tests are mandatory if you have previous knowledge of the language.

Test procedure:

1. Please visit the following website: Placement Tests TU Dresden
2. Click on the test for your language. The login page will appear.
3. Log in as a guest (under the login menu).
4. Click on the link to the test with the red symbol “(Language) Test,” then click on the “Start E-Test” field. The test will open in a new tab. On the introduction page of the test, you will find a link to the sample test.
5. Start the placement test by clicking on START. You have 25 minutes to complete the test.

You will receive your results (score/language course level) immediately after completing the test. Please bring them with you to your first lesson. The tests must be completed independently and without any aids.

By passing a placement test, you qualify for the next higher proficiency level.

To participate in a German language course, you must provide a valid language certificate confirming your German language proficiency. The only exception is level A1.1, for which no previous knowledge of German is required.
If you do not submit an appropriate document, you will be removed from the course and will not be permitted to participate. You may only enroll in a course at the level indicated on your proof of language proficiency. Enrollment in a lower-level course is not permitted.

The following documents are accepted:

• Your Certificate of Attendance from the previous semester, available for download in SELMA
• A German language certificate issued by the Goethe-Institut, telc, DSH/FSP, TestDaF, UNIcert, ÖSD, DSD, TUDIAS, Volkshochschule, Kästner Kolleg Dresden, Sprachwerkstatt Dresden or your home university. The certificate must not be more than one year old. Older certificates will not be accepted.
• A placement test result, if you do not have a current language certificate

The placement tests will be held in person only on the following dates:

• September 22, 2026, 2:00–5:30 p.m.
• September 24, 2026, 2:00–5:30 p.m.
• September 29, 2026, 2:00–5:30 p.m.
• October 8, 2026, 2:00–5:30 p.m.

Registration for the placement test is not required. Simply come to the Haus der Sprachen on the scheduled dates. Bring your ZIH login and your TU Dresden email address with you. Please allow for a wait time. The test takes about 45 minutes. You may take the placement test only once and cannot retake it. The test cannot be taken online at home.
Immediately after completing the test, you will receive a binding placement recommendation, which you can upload to Opal as proof of language proficiency.
