Contents: | - Development of a basic vocabulary of approx. 600 words. - Mediation and practice of the selected grammar areas. - Imparting and practicing the basic skills of decoding and recoding Latin original texts (prose) of medium difficulty. - Imparting basic knowledge of Latin cultural and literary history. |

Workload: | The workload is 150 hours. Of this, 90 hours are devoted to self-study, including exam preparation and completion of the exam. |
Credit points and grades: | The credit points are acquired if the examinations are passed. The exam consists of a written exam of 90 minutes and, if required, an oral exam of 15 minutes. The oral examination is only required in some courses. |
Examinations: | - Graded participation certificate if only an exam is written. - If credited as a module (written exam and oral exam), 5 credit points are acquired unless the subject-specific study regulations specify otherwise. - If an oral examination is required, the examinations are weighted 2 (written exam): 1 (oral exam), unless another weighting is specified in the respective study regulations. - The examination results cannot be offset. |
Qualification goals: | At level B1 of the CEFR, students have a solid knowledge of selected areas of Latin grammar and can actively apply and reflect on this in text analysis. They master the methods of decoding and recoding original Latin texts of medium difficulty at a speed of at least one word per minute. The students are able to classify these texts in their historical-cultural context and have basic knowledge of individual epochs, genres and authors of Latin literary history from the 1st BC to the 18th century. |
Usability: | In degree programs that provide for language seminars / language courses in the supplementary area. |
Teaching material: | All Latin 2 courses (classroom courses) use course-internal teaching material in bound form, which is made available to the course participants at the beginning of the course. The teaching material is included in the online course. Only one of the following dictionaries is allowed for the "Latin Knowledge" and Latinum exams:
Electronic dictionaries are permitted as long as they are closed systems without the possibility of memory expansion (no USB interface, no expansion option with plug-in cards, etc.). Internet-enabled aids are excluded. |
Remarks/Miscellaneous: | The exam after 8 SWS is written as a central exam. Passing the exam is the prerequisite for taking part in Latin 3. The exam is written with a dictionary. Only one dictionary is allowed at a time. From the 2012 edition of the Pons dictionary, the removable booklet must be removed. Registration in OPAL. Enrollment required. You can find the exam date in OPAL. Registration for the exams takes place via OPAL in the same way as for course registration. Students of courses that require knowledge of Latin end their training in Latin either with an exam after 8 SWS (internal university degree) or with the state oral exam "Knowledge of Latin". Students in the teaching profession who have to prove knowledge of Latin are obliged to take the state examination for knowledge of Latin. Registration for the state examination "Knowledge of Latin" takes place at the State Office for Schools and Education, Dresden location, Grossenhainer Str. 92, 01127 Dresden, using the registration form. Make sure that you submit your documents on time and in full. The aids permitted for the examination must be brought to both the written and the oral examination.
