Contents: | - Development of a vocabulary of approx. 350 words. - Mediation and practice of selected areas of basic grammar (morphology: indicative, imperative, infinitive, 1st, 2nd and 3rd declension; syntax: clauses of different types, sentence construction AcI). - Teaching and practicing basic skills for decoding and recoding simple Latin original texts (prose). - Imparting basic knowledge of Latin cultural and literary history. |
Prerequisite: | Mastery of individual learning strategies for foreign language acquisition as well as good general basic grammatical knowledge. |

Workload: | The workload is 150 hours. Of this, 90 hours are devoted to self-study, including exam preparation and completion of the exam. |
Credit points and grades: | The credit points are acquired if the examinations are passed. The exam consists of a written exam of 90 minutes and, if required, an oral exam of 15 minutes. The oral examination is only required in some courses. |
Examinations: | - Graded participation certificate if only an exam is written. - If credited as a module (written exam and oral exam), 5 credit points are acquired unless the subject-specific study regulations specify otherwise. - If an oral examination is required, the examinations are weighted 2 (written exam) : 1 (oral exam), unless another weighting is specified in the respective study regulations. - The examination performances cannot be offset. |
Qualification goals: | The students have a secure knowledge of selected areas of basic Latin grammar and basic knowledge of lexicon at level A1/A2 of the CEFR and can actively apply and reflect on this in text analysis. They master the methods of decoding and recoding simple and partly adapted original Latin texts at a rate of one word per minute. The students are able to classify these texts in their historical-cultural context. |
Usability: | In degree programs that provide for language seminars / language courses in the supplementary area. |
Teaching material: | Course-internal teaching material will be made available to course participants at the beginning of the course. |
Remarks/Miscellaneous: | The exam is offered as a central exam. Passing the exam is a prerequisite for participation in LATEIN-2. The exam is written with a dictionary. Only one dictionary is allowed at a time. From the 2012 edition of the Pons dictionary, the removable booklet must be removed. Registration in OPAL. Enrollment required.
